Breakfast Boost for Glencull

31st Aug 2017

The children at St Malachy’s are having an extra special start to the new school year as they have received a £1000.00 grant from cereal giant Kellogg’s to enhance their successful breakfast club.

Kellogg’s supports breakfast clubs across the country with training, cereal donations and funding so that schools can run a sustainable pre-school club.

The staff at Glencull undertook training supported by Kellogg’s. The training course, developed by Northumbria University, gives practical support and advice on how to run an effective breakfast club covering aspects such as child nutrition, food hygiene, advertising and how to access other sources of funding.

Mrs Mallon who runs the breakfast club at Glencull said: “The funding is fantastic but the handy tips we picked up through the training course were priceless. We are looking forward to using the grant money to subsidise breakfasts for the children as well as buying some new crockery and play equipment for the club.

Principal, Mr Gormley added “It’s so encouraging to see companies like Kellogg’s supporting breakfast clubs like ours as it means we can carry on providing this great resource for our children and families.”

Kellogg’s started its breakfast club programme in 1998 when there were barely any breakfast clubs in the UK.

Damien Mc Dermott from Kellogg’s, said “We believe all children should have the opportunity to start the day with breakfast, and we’re really proud of what we have achieved through our breakfast club programme, helping to support 3000 clubs with training, funding and cereal donations.”

The student council also have plans for some of the money they received from Kellogg’s. They plan to run their annual Family Funday on Saturday 9th of September to raise even more money for the great activities that go on at Glencull.

Already confirmed for the Fun Day are a designing activity from the Michaela Foundation who have a well-established link with Glencull. Todd’s Leap will be bringing some of their world class activates to Glencull Primary school, and there will be bouncy castles for all ages; toddlers, primary age children and teenagers. Cage football, which was very popular last year, will be back in use. Krazy Karts will also be providing Go Carts for those speed demons out there. Friends of Glencull will be providing face painting on the day.

The event kicks off at 1pm and concludes at 5pm. All the activities are free once you’ve entered the grounds with Friends of Glencull collecting minimum donations of £10 per family at the entrance. Food will be available to buy on the day with a visit from Cathal Gormley, from Il Carro Della Pizza, who will be making wood fired pizzas on site, and there will be a cup of tea available along with some chat with old friends and new.

So why not park at St Malachy’s Church Ballymacilroy and make the Historic walk over the newly renovated Nature walk and enjoy a day with Friends and Family at Glencull family Funday.
